Interim
Interim Parish Musician

Position Overview

This is a temporary position to provide music leadership for Sunday worship and special services while the congregation conducts a search for a permanent Parish Musician. The interim musician will work closely with Pastor Ron Philabaum to plan and lead congregational song in the Lutheran tradition.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead congregational singing and provide accompaniment at the 10:00 AM Sunday worship service
  • Play the Schantz pipe organ (3-manual) and/or Yamaha grand piano as primary worship instruments
  • Provide music leadership for seasonal and special services (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, funerals, weddings as needed)
  • Collaborate with the pastor on worship planning and music selection consistent with the ELCA lectionary
  • Rehearse and direct the adult choir as schedule allows

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency on pipe organ, with ability to play the Schantz 3-manual instrument
  • Facility with piano accompaniment; additional keyboard skills welcome
  • Familiarity with Lutheran hymnody and liturgical worship (ELW preferred)
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy and lay leadership
  • Choral directing experience a plus

Part-Time
Part-Time Parish Musician

Position Overview

Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church seeks a gifted and dedicated musician to serve as our permanent Part-Time Parish Musician. This individual will anchor the music life of our congregation — from Sunday morning worship to the rhythm of the liturgical year. The position reports directly to the senior pastor.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide musical leadership for the 10:00 AM Sunday worship service each week
  • Play the Schantz pipe organ (3-manual) and Yamaha grand piano as the primary worship instruments
  • Lead congregational singing, accompany liturgical responses, and provide prelude/postlude music
  • Plan monthly music repertoire in consultation with the pastor, aligned with the ELCA lectionary and church seasons
  • Provide music for major liturgical seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost
  • Support occasional services including weddings, funerals, and special congregational events
  • Recruit, rehearse, and direct the adult choir (schedule TBD with incoming musician)

Qualifications

  • Significant pipe organ experience; ability to play a 3-manual Schantz instrument is required
  • Strong piano skills with experience accompanying choral groups and soloists
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lutheran hymnody, liturgy, and the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) hymnal
  • Experience in a church music setting; parish musician experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining close partnership with clergy
  • Degree in music, sacred music, or church music (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Choral conducting background a significant plus

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Details provided upon interview.
